Smashing Burger

  • Jun 23
  • 1 min read

The Smashing Burger is a great way to enjoy burgers in the winter season without firing up the grill in the snow! Enjoy burgers that are extra crispy on the outside, while still juicy on the inside. Crispy is the key! Chef Mathieu Paré of the Canadian Beef Centre of Excellence shows Canadian Women’s Hockey Player Haley Irwin how to make these Smashing Burgers at home.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Heat a cast-iron heavy skillet over medium-high until very hot, about 2 minutes, then lightly brush with vegetable oil.

  2. Season ground beef all over with a generous dash of salt and ground pepper, gently folding into the ground beef prior to forming into balls. Divide ground beef into 4 loosely formed balls (this is the key to a great smash burger).

  3. Add round balls to skillet and using a firm, stiff metal spatula, press down on each one to flatten. Cook without moving until a golden brown crust develops, about 4 minutes. Use the edge of the spatula to carefully scrape up and flip the patties one at a time, making sure to get all browned bits removed from the skillet.

  4. Top each patty with a slice of cheddar cheese. Continue to cook until digital rapid-read thermometer inserted sideways into centre of each patty reads 160°F (71°C). Top each cooked patty with your favourite burger condiments.
